Life is About Choices
you two choices, believe yourself or believe the voices." ~SW"Life gives
In 2010, I was working as a special education teacher. I loved my job, but one day a student accused me of being a hypocrite.
He explained, that almost everyday I would begin the day playing a little on my guitar and telling them that they need to find their calling in life and then pursue it with all their heart and soul. And yet, I wasn't doing that with my music.
So, I made a deal with the student and agreed to play a few shows the coming Summer. After playing for only 3 weeks, on a fluke, I sent a song I wrote in to the Oprah Lifeclass Show on the OWN network. Three days later I got a call from the producers saying that they loved the song and wanted me to play it live on the show for Oprah.
Oddly enough, the real adventure is what happened afterwards.
I was raised in a family of musicians, entertainers and show people. All of which, at some point realized that their dream of music wasn't going to happen. From a small child, I've been musical. My mom says I'd been making up songs since the age of three and wrote my first real song at 12. I play drums, piano and guitar but my true love has always been singing.
As much as my relatives love me, they also feared I would fail in music and wanted to save me from heartache. They said, "Music is a hobby." or "Singing isn't a real job". So, although I loved music, I listened; for 30 years.
Then came that day. Because of that one student, I decided to try. It was having the courage to try that landed me on Oprah - and all the reasons I gave myself for not trying to be a musician no long made sense.
I thought: You can't be a musician because you are.. too old, too fat, from too small of a town, and on and on... None of them made sense any longer because now the answer was... Wait, I just sang on Oprah Winfrey. And on that day, my fear was gone.
Since then, I've won the Bob Dylan Songwriting Award twice, was a semifinalist for X-Factor, had a song inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame, created four albums, play 250 shows a year and in 2016 sang in a Super Bowl 50 commercial with Seal.
Life is about the choices we make and fear is the biggest thing that keeps us from making the choices we truly want.
